How to enable caller name in your mobile

Author: Administrator    Published: 31-10-2025

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has sanctioned a significant initiative put forth by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) aimed at displaying the name of the caller during incoming calls. This new feature, referred to as Calling Name Presentation (CNAP), will present the verified name of the caller on the screen of the recipient's phone.

In accordance with the guidelines, the CNAP feature will be enabled by default for all mobile users throughout India. Subscribers who wish to opt out of this feature may contact their telecom service provider (TSP) to have it disabled. Unlike third-party applications like Truecaller, this feature will function within the telecom network and will utilize verified subscriber data gathered during SIM card registration or subscribing to services like Airtel, Jio, VI or BSNL.

Once the feature is implemented, it will enable users to recognize the name of the calling party prior to answering the call. TRAI anticipates that this initiative will assist subscribers in making more informed choices regarding whether to accept or decline calls, while also decreasing the volume of spam and scam calls where callers try to impersonate as bank professionals or some respectable authority.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has instructed telecom service providers to uphold a Calling Name (CNAM) database that includes the names of all registered users associated with their respective phone numbers. Upon receiving an incoming call, the terminating service provider will authenticate the calling number via the Local Number Portability Database (LNPD) to ascertain the originating service provider. Subsequently, the verified name of the caller will be shown on the recipient's device.

At present, Indian telecom networks only show mobile or landline numbers via Calling Line Identification (CLI), without any obligation to disclose the caller's name. The implementation of CNAP will enhance this system by adding an additional layer of information, thereby increasing transparency in voice communication.

The TRAI has announced that CNAP will be launched as an additional service associated with fundamental telecom services, instead of being offered as an independent feature. The regulatory body anticipates that telecom providers will facilitate seamless integration and uphold data security for subscribers information once the service is implemented across the country.

So just for caution remeber if you have purchased a SIM in your name for your family members, in future if call goes from those mobile phones the call receiver will see your name as per the regisration data.
